A congressman is looking to change the face of the $50 bill – literally.

Rep. Patrick McHenry, a Republican from North Carolina, wants to give Ulysses S. Grant the boot and replace his visage with former President Ronald Reagan.

"Every generation needs its own heroes," McHenry said in a statement.

"One decade into the 21st century, it's time to honor the last great president of the 20th and give President Reagan a place beside Presidents Roosevelt and Kennedy."

McHenry has enlisted the support of 13 other Republicans in a bill that would have the U.S. Treasury change the bill, removing the Civil War general and 18th President of the United States from the currency.

"President Reagan was a modern-day statesman," he said, "whose presidency transformed our nation's political and economic thinking."

This isn't the first time a lawmaker has moved to get Reagan's face on American money. Efforts to have the 40th President of the United States on the $20 bill and the dime both drew criticism and failed.

All polls I've seen are in favor of Grant - lets hope it stays that way.

Well ..... the appearance should change but not the overall look.

“Of the more than 180 countries that issue paper currency,” Judge Robertson wrote in his decision a year and a half ago, “only the United States prints bills that are identical in size and color in all their denominations.”

One day - and soon - I think we will see multi color and size bills in circulation like every other country in the world.

they'll eventually change the currency and flip it over to more of a universal "north american" name.  the government really wants to stop using coins, as they cost more to produce then they're worth...evident by the announcement that the 50cent piece will cease production, and that coin collectors are saving all nickles now (not just pre 1960 silver).

I don't agree. Take the Euro for example and all of the controversy, downfalls, etc that it has been plagued with from the start and continue. I cannot locate the article I was reading but the Euro is the perfect example (just more members) than a united American currency. Ours would be a bit more simplistic but would have its own complexities. You have a leader in charge (Germany) and who the fate of the currency and economic zone relies on, the middle man (Canada) whom would only gain by adding their sub par economy and currency, and the leach (Greece) whom would be retarded not to join as their currency and economy were in dire need of the cash injection/economic stability/etc. There are many critics of the Euro and the biggest is the UK ..... why do you think they have not joined and merged currencies.

If this did happen - I'd ask for 50 one dollar bills instead of a Regan $50 bill.
