MILWAUKEE, WI (June, 2009) – The Fifth Ward will soon have a new watering hole. Housed in the old Kramer Foundry building on First Street, Stacked will feature a bar that relies on local brews, large format beers, great affordable wines and an inventive menu of ‘stacked’ fare.

The Bar

Stacked will specialize in large format sharing beers to local taps and bottles and a funky list of approachable wines. Featuring juice you won’t find in your average grocery store, bottles will be priced at $30, allowing for choice based on flavor profiles and regions, not price. Of the twenty-something bottles, most will be available as $7 glass pours. Bar specials will include not one, but two happy hours – one from 4pm to 6pm and one for late shifters from 10pm to 12am. Other promotions are to include ‘stacks’ of nostalgic beers in cans and a Milwaukee morning staple: great Bloody Marys, complete with all the fixings.

The Menu

Where the bar focuses on Milwaukee specialties like Lakefront favorites and Rehorst mixers, the local love will carry through to the menu – great burgers stacked high with Wisconsin grass-fed Fountain Prairie Farms beef and artisanal Wisconsin cheeses, starting at under $10. Sides and salads will arrive stacked up, including both vegetarian and vegan options. What’s for dessert? Specialty shakes – available virgin or spiked – in flavors like Cream City Vanilla and Golden Cadillac.

The Space

Housed next to Alterra, Stacked’s décor will take full advantage of the foundry’s original architecture, from highlighting the Cream City brick walls and exposed ceilings with original custom artwork to featuring an 80-year-old refinished pool table. With seating at high banquets and aluminum bar stools to a back, low-lit lounge and outside on the dog-friendly “Stacked Deck,” Stacked will be sure to add a much-needed laid-back hangout to the area.

The Staff

Stacked is the original concept of The Iron Horse Hotel owner Tim Dixon of Dixon Development, who owns the building itself. Noted Milwaukee chef Bruce Evans will serve as Chef/Operator with talent in the kitchen coming from East Troy native Cory Reifschneider as Chef de Cuisine. Their plan? To bring an authentic local burger-bar experience to the Milwaukee bar and dining scene.

It's been only six months since The Social closed its doors for good in the Fifth Ward, but The Iron Horse Hotel's Tim Dixon is working hard to reopen the space at 170 S. 1st St. by July.

His concept is called Stacked, a bar featuring "large format sharing beers" and a restaurant specializing in upscale burgers stacked high with Wisconsin grass-fed Fountain Prairie Farms beef and artisan Wisconsin cheeses.

The bar indulges in two happy hours -- 4 to 6 p.m. and a late-night one from 10 p.m. to midnight -- and has an accessible but interesting wine list. There are also "stacks" of nostalgic beers in cans and a Milwaukee morning staple: Bloody Marys with all the fixings.

The rest of the dining menu is rounded out with sides and salads (vegetarian options available) as well as specialty shakes, like the Cream City Vanilla and Golden Cadillac, which come virgin or with booze.

The large outdoor patio along 1st Street, known as the Stacked Deck, will be dog friendly.
